Micheal Smith

Mike is a Lecturer in Physiotherapy at Cardiff University where he specialises in the diagnosis and management of shoulder disorders. His previous achievements in sports medicine includes receiving the British Association for Sports and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) Researcher Prize for Clinical Excellence for his work on shoulder taping. Mike is also a former recipient of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) Allied Health Professional fellowship award and currently sits on the European Society for Shoulder and Elbow Rehabilitation (EUSSER) scientific committee.

 

As part of a £170k personal fellowship from Arthritis Research UK, Mike re-trained as a Sonographer and went on to publish the paper “A training, assessment and feedback package for the trainee shoulder sonographer”. In providing a foundation for learning shoulder ultrasound, this is cited in the cross-profession, national “Guidelines for Professional Ultrasound Practice”.

 

Mike is passionate about the highest standards of ultrasound training and initiated the process of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (CSP) joining the Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education (CASE) which is the national body for accrediting sonographic courses for over 80% of the ultrasound scanning workforce in the UK. Mike currently sits on CASE committee representing the CSP and is also the first non-radiologist / non-radiographer to sit on the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS’s) Professional Standards Group. Mike is involved at a national level in teaching shoulder ultrasound and its integration into patient care pathways for a range of professional disciplines via the British Medical Ultrasound Society and also the University of West of England.
